Israel Strike Kills Iran Security Chief Ali Larijani, Son and Aide Also Dead

Iran’s top security chief Ali Larijani has been killed in an Israeli attack. In the same incident, his son Morteza Larijani and an aide were also killed.

Iran’s state television and the Supreme National Security Council have confirmed the information.

Earlier on Tuesday (March 17), Israel had claimed that it carried out a targeted strike to kill Ali Larijani.

Political leaders and officials across Iran have strongly condemned the killing. The country’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, in an interview with Al Jazeera, said, “Such attacks will not be able to weaken Iran’s system.”

He further said, “This state is not dependent on individuals, but rather institution-based. Even in the past, the system remained intact despite the deaths of more important figures.”

Meanwhile, speculation has begun over who will succeed Larijani following his death. According to protocol, Saeed Jalili, the second representative of the Supreme National Security Council, may take over the responsibility. However, whether a new appointment will be made depends on the decision of the country’s supreme leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei.

Notably, on the same day, Iranian authorities also confirmed the death of Basij chief Gholamreza Soleimani.
