A sudden surge in measles infections has been observed across the country. In the current month of March alone, 19 children have died at the Infectious Diseases Hospital in the capital. Doctors say that the outbreak has increased due to delayed vaccination, vaccine shortages, and the government’s booster dose not being administered on time. However, the Health Minister has stated that the government is fully prepared to combat the measles situation.
From Patuakhali to Barishal, and then to Dhaka—mother Umme Kulsum has been running from one hospital to another with her 10-month-old child Inara. Like her, many other parents have brought their measles-infected children to hospitals. At every moment, they are haunted by the fear of losing their children. Nurses and doctors are struggling to cope with the pressure of patients.
Umme Kulsum said, “After coming here, they have given medicine and injections. The doctor said we have to stay admitted here until recovery.”
Doctors say that the situation is becoming complicated due to lack of awareness and irregular vaccination. Until Sunday noon, more than 120 measles patients have been admitted to the Infectious Diseases Hospital. In March alone, 19 children have died there.
Dr. A R M Sakhawat Hossain, a consultant in child health at the Infectious Diseases Hospital, said, “Many parents do not want to vaccinate their children. Every five years, the government provides a booster dose to children aged 9 months to 15 years, which has not been given this time. It was last administered in 2020.”
However, Health Minister Sardar Sakhawat Hossain Bokul said that the government has taken all necessary preparations to combat measles. He also said that 6.04 billion taka has been allocated to purchase new vaccines.
The Health Minister said, “We have taken all preparations to prevent measles infection. All wards of DNCC Hospital in Dhaka have been prepared. ICU facilities with ventilators have also been arranged there. Similar preparations are in place at the Infectious Diseases Hospital.”
Experts have advised that as soon as symptoms of measles appear, people should quickly seek medical advice and take necessary measures.
