March Sees Sharp Rise in Road Crashes, Mob Violence, and Crime

March saw a significant rise in road accidents, mob violence, and overall law and order concerns across Bangladesh, highlighting a growing public safety crisis.

According to the report, nearly all major indicators showed an upward trend, reflecting a deterioration in safety conditions. Road accidents and violent incidents increased notably during the month, raising concerns among experts and rights groups.

Mob violence remained widespread, with at least 36 incidents reported, leaving 19 people dead and 31 others injured. Victims were often targeted over allegations of theft, robbery, or personal disputes. Analysts warned that the continuation of mob justice signals declining public trust in the formal legal system.

The report also raised concerns over custodial deaths. Two people died in law enforcement custody during March, while 11 deaths were reported in prison custody, raising serious questions about accountability and human rights.

At the same time, attacks on religious minorities increased, including at least 10 incidents involving vandalism or theft of idols, along with cases of arson and property damage.

Journalists faced increasing risks as well. At least 30 journalists were subjected to attacks, threats, or legal harassment during the month, indicating growing pressure on media freedom.

Additionally, the use of the Cyber Security Ordinance increased, with new cases filed and arrests made under the law, intensifying concerns over civil liberties.

Experts and rights organisations warned that the combined rise in accidents, violence, and institutional issues points to a deepening crisis in governance and public safety. They urged immediate measures to restore law and order and rebuild public confidence.
