Mozammel Haque Chowdhury, Secretary General of the Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samity, has filed a general diary (GD) at Demra Police Station in Dhaka, alleging continuous threats and intimidation.
According to a press release from the organization, the GD was filed online on Tuesday morning.
Mozammel Haque said, “Since the publication of a report on excessive fare collection during the Eid travel period before Eid, I have been continuously threatened in the names of various agencies, transport owners, and labor leaders.”
The complaint states that for the past two decades, as the founder of Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samity, Mozammel Haque Chowdhury has been advocating for passenger rights, safety, and the reduction of public suffering and hardship. During the previous Awami League government, under pressure from transport syndicates, the then Road Transport Minister filed multiple cases against him and had him imprisoned.
It is further alleged that under the new government, as part of the organization’s ongoing work, two reports one on excessive fares during Eid and another on road accidents after Eid—have led to continued threats and intimidation from various organizations, transport owners, workers, and other groups.
Earlier, on Monday, the organization published a report on road accidents during Eid travel and presented it at a press conference at the Dhaka Reporters Unity.
Mozammel Haque said on Tuesday afternoon that after returning to his area following the press conference, from the afternoon onward, some unidentified individuals in microbuses and private cars were monitoring his movements. They were seen loitering suspiciously around his office, residence, and business establishments.
He added that these individuals have been inquiring about his whereabouts and activities, as well as those of his family members, from different people.
In this situation, Mozammel Haque has sought the Prime Minister’s intervention to ensure his personal safety.
Sub-Inspector Monirul Islam of Demra Police Station said in the afternoon, “He (Mozammel Haque) filed the GD today. We have made initial inquiries.
“After speaking directly with him, necessary measures will be taken.”
