Nearly 150,000 Rohingya refugees have fled to Bangladesh over the last 16 months as violence continues to intensify in Myanmar’s Rakhine State, according to the UN refugee agency UNHCR.
The agency reported on May 13 that 149,769 Rohingyas were recorded entering Bangladesh between December 2024 and March 31, 2026. Among the latest arrivals, 2,780 individuals were officially registered during April this year.
UNHCR data shows that more than 1.19 million Rohingyas are currently living in refugee camps across Bangladesh. Women and children make up 78 percent of the camp population, while around 12 percent are people living with disabilities.
The agency said ongoing armed conflict, violence, and human rights abuses in Myanmar since 2024 have forced thousands of Rohingyas to escape in search of safety across the border in Bangladesh.
According to the latest figures, UNHCR has documented over 1.04 million Rohingyas who were displaced from Myanmar between 1990 and 2017. Of them, 39,691 entered Bangladesh after 1990, while the vast majority arrived following the large-scale military crackdown in 2017.
The report further noted that worsening instability in Rakhine State has continued to trigger new refugee movements since 2024. Many newly arrived Rohingyas were identified in refugee camps toward the end of 2024, and biometric verification and registration processes are currently ongoing.
